A Cat A Day 2013 #50

PhotoRosa is Florence’s sister and she still lives with her breeder Jo, who kept her as a breeding queen. You see her here with her kittens in a photograph from last week. I think they are all so beautiful.
Sadly for Jo and for Rosa, who is a great mum, pregnancy and kitten-birth don’t agree with Rosa, so she’s not going to have another litter. The silver lining for us is that Rosa might retire to our house! We are all waiting with fingers crossed for her to feel top-fit again and perhaps she might join us at Easter. Squeak!

Beautiful Fudge belongs to Reina Andaluza, a fellow languages teacher with whom I have connected on Twitter. I actually don’t know her real name, which is an odd feeling. Reina A has also let me have a photograph of Fudge’s friend Minx, who we will see soon. Thank you for sharing.

On a different note, I read today that Posterous is definitely closing on 30th April, so I will have to spend some time this half-term choosing an alternative host for ACAD and exporting, then importing this blog.

Annoying, but I shall not be thwarted in my feline pointlessness.

A Cat A Day 2013 #38

A student of mine is of Russian descent and he brought this little tiny book into school today to show me. I loved it and he just casually said ‘Oh you can keep it Miss, we have loads more at home’. I really don’t think I can accept, but I have brought it home for the night so I can have a good look at it.

I think the Cyrillic script is so fascinating because the shapes of the letters are familiar, yet the meaning remains mysterious. I have spent a while trying to make the title out with the help of the Internet, but I have totally failed.

Edit: Isobel has just shown me how to use Google Goggles [amazing!] and I now know the book is called something like “Roots Chukovsky” and the text on the cat page says ‘I byl cherrny kot vot takoy‘, which means “There is a black cat”.

I can tell that it’s a story about a little chick and a worm in which this fluffy cat plays a small role. It was published in 1985. My student is a Russian- speaker, so I will ask him to tell me more tomorrow when I give it back.

My friend Helen is a fellow cat-lover and shares her home with two fluffy black cats and three Siamese.

As you can see from today’s photograph, sweet baby Pearl joined the family a few short months ago. Chris and Helen’s little one was born 8 weeks early and caused some worry for a while. Happily, she is now thriving and Helen is back at work, while Chris is relishing his r??le as a full-time dad.

Naughty Winston claimed to be baby-sitting this morning, but Helen says it was really just opportunism; cats are not allowed to sit on Pearl’s wool blanket. I imagine this picture was snapped, then Winston was chased.

A Cat A Day 2013 #26

These four Siamese kittens were born this morning to Belle and Rio. Breeder Joanne Law of Riobelle Siamese, took this picture about three minutes after the last kitten was born. Jo thinks there are three girls and a boy, although she says it’s difficult to be sure so early. This evening, Belle is showing what a good mum she is and all is calm with the kittens healthy and suckling confidently.

I know they are not pretty yet, but it’s always touching to see new babies come into the world, isn’t it?

Thank you for permission to use your picture, Jo.
